Tribute to Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, Special 1960 UK Tour, Jubilee Memorial Rock'n'Roll

A l’initiative de Philippe Fessard ont été présentés en l’espace d’un week-end trois concerts à Pagney (Meurthe et Moselle – 19 novembre), Pierrelaye (Val D’Oise – 20 novembre) et Etampes (Essonne – 21 novembre) commémorant la tournée au Royaume Uni que débutèrent ensemble Gene Vincent et Eddie Cochran, le 24 janvier 1960. Projet sympathique et bienvenu qui réunissait Thierry Le Coz, Ervin Travis et The New Virginians. L’année 2010, avec la publication de deux livres et ces trois concerts, restera en France comme l’année Gene Vincent.

Le théâtre d’Etampes bâti au 19eme siècle et d’une capacité d’environs deux cents personnes (parterre + 2 balcons) est un lieu idéal pour se rapprocher des salles de concerts telles qu’elles étaient encore dans les 50’s et retrouver l’ambiance de cette tournée organisée par Larry Parnes qui, malheureusement, coûta la vie à Eddie Cochran. A l’entrée, nous avons eut le plaisir d’un recevoir un petit programme qui reprenait la présentation de l’original et d’avoir le stand de Thundersound Records où, outre une large sélection de disques, était présenté le livre/LP sur Gene Vincent "Tribulation d’un rocker en France et dans les pays francophones" (Garett McLean). Une publication indispensable comme l’est le livre récent de Jean-William Thoury.

Après une présentation par Marcel Rapp (Master of Ceremony) et un court hommage à Charlie Barbat qui nous a quitté le 12 octobre 2010, un superbe documentaire vidéo sur Gene Vincent et Eddie Cochran, composé de document rares (photos, memorablia, films et émissions télés), nous fut projeté. Excellente introduction à un spectacle qui ne le fut pas moins.

Philippe Fessard & Thierry Le Coz

Une fois Les New Virginians en place (P. Fessard –gtr – D. Daigneau – pno – F. Kolinsky – dms – Gilles Tournon – bs), Thierry le Coz fit son apparition tournant le dos au public, comme le faisait Eddie durant cette tournée, portant lunettes de soleil, pantalon de cuir, chemise en tartan et un boléro. Sans sombrer dans le plagiat, Thierry et les New Virginians (occupant là place des Wildcats de Marty Wilde) nous gratifièrent de superbes interprétations de "Hallelujah ! I Love Her So", "Milk Cow Blues", "What’d I Say", "Twenty Flight Rock', "Sweet Little Sixteen", "C’mon Everybody", "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" (tous enregistrés alors pour les emissions radio/TV "Boy Meet Girls”" et "Saturday Club"). Suivirent "My Way", "Pretty Girl", "Teenage Heaven", "Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie", "My Love To Remember", "Nervous Breakdown", "Skinny Jim" et "Three Steps to Heaven" et quelques autres morceaux du repertoire d’Eddie. Rien à redire… I get my free ride for the Leeds Empire or the Ipswich Gaumont !

Après un entracte de 30 minutes et un changement de tenue, Les New Virginians (en lieu et place des Beat Boys) étaient de retour sur scène pour accompagner Ervin Travis tout de cuir vêtu. Comme lors de la première partie, les morceaux interprétés par Gene en 1960 pour "Boy Meets Girls" et "Saturday Club" furent repris avec brio : "Say Mama", "Summertime", "Rocky Road Blues", "Wild Cat", "My Heart" et, bien entendu , "Be Bop A Lula". Parmi les autres morceaux figuraient "Frankie and Johnnie", "Look What You Gone and Done To Me", "Lotta Lovin’", "Dance to the Bop", "I Got A Baby", "Bluejean Bop", "Over The Rainbow" et un grandiose "Baby Blue". Damien Daigneau fut excellent au piano et le support vocal apporté par celui-ci et Fred Kolinsky à Ervin absolument remarquable. Philippe Fessard et Gilles Tournon ont comme d’habitude apporté une dimension musicale et visuelle appréciée. Bien qu’ayant a accompagner deux artistes au repertoire differents, le groupe sur restituer avec authenticité le son et le style de chacun. Eddie et sa fureur de vivre, Gene et sa rage de survivre !

Les deux compères se retrouvèrent ensemble sur scène pour clôturer le programme en nous interprètant "White Lightnin’", "Pistol Packin’ Mama" et "My Babe". 50 ans après cette légendaire tournée et avec de nouveaux interprètes/musiciens, la magie a parfaitement fonctionnée. La qualité des New Virginians et le talent vocal/musical de Thierry et Ervin nous a procuré deux heures et demie d’un plaisir rare et bienvenu.

At the initiative of Philippe Fessard were presented in the space of an extended week-end three concerts at Pagney (Meurthe et Moselle - 19 November), Pierrelaye (Val d'Oise - 20 November) and Etampes (Essonne - November 21 ) commemorating the Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran tour that began in January 24, 1960. Project that brought together friendly and welcome Thierry Le Coz, Erwin Travis and The New Virginians as performers. The year 2010 with the publication of two books and three concerts, will remain in France as the best Gene Vincent's year since long.

The Etampes' theater built in the 19th century and having a capacity of about two hundred persons (ground floor + 2 balconies) was an ideal place to get closer to concert halls as they were still in the 50's and find the atmosphere of the tour organized by Larry Parnes, who unfortunately took the life of Eddie Cochran. At the entrance, we had the pleasure of receiving a small program which took over the presentation of the original and have the stand Thundersound Records where, besides a large selection of records, was presented the book / LP Gene Vincent "Tribulation a rocker in France and francophone countries" (Gareth McLean). An essential publication as is the recent book by John William Thoury "Gene Vincent - Dieu du Rock 'n Roll".

Without falling into plagiarism, Thierry and the New Virginians (occupying the place of Marty Wilde's Wildcats) goes on superb interpretations of "Hallelujah ! I Love Her So", "Milk Cow Blues", "What’d I Say", "Twenty Flight Rock', "Sweet Little Sixteen", "C’mon Everybody", "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" (all recorded for radio / TV " Boy Meets Girls "and" Saturday Club"). Follow "My Way", "Pretty Girl", "Teenage Heaven", "Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie", "My Love To Remember", "Nervous Breakdown", "Skinny Jim" et "Three Steps to Heaven" and a few other pieces of the repertoire of Eddie. Nothing to add than... I get my fee ride for the Leeds Empire or The Ipswich Gaumont ! What a trip !

After an intermission of 30 minutes and a change of clothes, The New Virginians (instead of the Beat Boys) wearing satin shirts were back on stage to back Travis Ervin wearing all black leather outfit. As in the first part, the songs sung by Gene in 1960 "Boy Meets Girls" and "Saturday Club" were taken up brilliantly : "Say Mama", "Summertime", "Rocky Road Blues", "Wild Cat", "My Heart" and, of course, "Be Bop A Lula". Among other songs included "Frankie and Johnnie", "Look What You Gone and Done To Me", "Lotta Lovin’", "Dance to the Bop", "I Got A Baby", "Bluejean Bop", "Over The Rainbow" and a great rendition of "Baby Blue". Damien Daigneau was excellent at the piano and voice support provided to Ervin by him and Fred Kolinsky absolutely remarkable. Philippe Fessard and Gilles Tounon have as usual added a visual and musical dimension much appreciated. Although both artists to accompany had a different directory and style, the group returned with authentic sound and true style of each. Eddie and its easy going way of life, Gene and its rage to survive !

The two friends found themselves together on stage to close the program performing "White Lightnin", "Pistol Packin' Mama" and "My Babe". 50 years after this legendary tour with new performers / musicians, magic has functioned perfectly. The New Virginians quality and the vocal talent /showmanship of Thierry and Ervin gave us two hours and half of a rare pleasure.
