Clyde Stacy
23 Décembre 2011

Clyde Stacy came from a family that moved to Arizona before settling in Lubbock (Texas) when he was about 13 years old. Knowing Buddy Holly and Sonny Curtis he progressed to his own radio show on KDAV before moving back in Tulsa when 18 years old. Tulsa was a musical place since long time and here he recruited John Le Van as lead guitarist. He was the one who play the killer guitar lead on "Hoy Hoy" cut in May/June 1957 and issued on Candlelight 1015 and Argyle 1001.

That song was a cover of a Little Johnny Jones’ song cut in October 1953 issued on Atlantic 1045 being also covered late 1957 by The Collins Kids on Columbia 41087. "Hoy Hoy" is the most even if the flip side "So Young", a ballad already cut The Clovers (Atlantic 1139), seem to have more action then. "So Young", even with its sexy female voice by Pat Peyton, is nothing more than a haunting ballad. That’s what we knew from Wayne Russell in the great Bear Family CD BCD 17152 "Clyde Stacy – Hoy Hoy". But we know since long that the complete story about an artist should never been told. There’s always something laying somewhere or buried that could come in light when the grave diggers came around...

That’s just what happened with that new single on Metropolitan featuring two unissued sides from the same session/same time. If “So Shy” is another ballad, "Cotton Pickin’ Chicken" is a killer rocker with wild scream, terrific guitar licks from John Le Van and strong slapping bass by Rick Eilerts. 2 minutes of pure boppin’ heaven music with vocal support that will drive you real loose. I don’t know who’s behind that record but that’s the definitive season gift !

Wilma Lee Cooper, Grand Ole Opry singer, dies at 90
2 Octobre 2011

By Bill Friskics-Warren

Wilma Lee Cooper, a perennial favorite with the Grand Ole Opry and a member, with her husband, Stoney, of a popular tradition-steeped country singing duo, died on Tuesday Sept 13, 2011 at her home in Sweetwater, Tenn. She was 90.

Her death was confirmed by Darlene Bieber, a spokeswoman for the Grand Ole Opry.

Ms. Cooper was a repository of the durable mountain music of her native Appalachia, an amalgamation of styles rooted in old-time ballads and fiddle tunes, rousing gospel shouting and sentimental parlor songs. Her music has often been labeled bluegrass, but Ms. Cooper, whose clarion alto was well suited to the noisy auditoriums and schoolhouses in which she and her husband performed in their early career, cultivated a more raw, forceful approach than that typically heard in bluegrass

Sonny Burns – A Real Cool Cat
30 Septembre 2011

From Bear Family

Mickey & Sylvia, a popular New York-based duo, were McHouston "Mickey" Baker, and Sylvia Vanderpool Robinson. They made their first recordings together in 1956 and enjoyed chart success the year later with "Love Is Strange" which peaked at position #11 in the pop charts.

"Love Is Strange" became a classic of the genre and was covered by the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Peaches & Herb, Sonny And Cher, Everything But The Girl, Buck Owens and Susan Raye, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Paul McCartney, Betty Everett, Connie Francis, a.o. The coy sexuality of this tune helped advance the storylines of several famous movies, including the 1972 adult film "Deep Throat", the 1973 movie "Badlands", and the 1987 movie "Dirty Dancing", where the main characters played by Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey mimed the song to each other.

The 2-CD set on Bear Family includes all their Rainbow, Groove, Vik, and RCA recordings from 1955 to 1965. Check out "Rise Sally Rise", "No Good Lover"', "'Shake It Up", "I'm Glad For Your Sake"', and "It's Gonna Work Out Fine".

The duo of Mickey & Sylvia broke up in the late 1950s, but Mickey & Sylvia continued recording together until 1965. Mickey Baker left the USA and build-up a successful career in France. Sylvia Robinson began recording as Sylvia in 1973 when she had a #3 hit with "Pillow Talk". Later she was one of the founders of Sugarhill Records, and she also was the driving force behind the first commercially successful rap single, 'Rapper's Delight' by the Sugarhill Gang.

Sylvia Robinson died in the morning of September 29, 2011, aged 75, from congestive heart failure.

"Country" Johnny Mathis Dead at 80
28 Septembre 2011

By Kenneth Partridge

"Country" Johnny Mathis, a singer and songwriter credited with penning more than 400 tunes over the course of his 60-plus-year career, died yesterday (Sept. 27) in Nashville. He was 80.

While Johnny shared his name with another performer -- legendary pop crooner Johnny Mathis -- he enjoyed a remarkable career in his own right. He got his start in 1949, when he signed to the StarTalent label, and in subsequent decades he recorded for Chess, Columbia and Mercury, among other labels.

Jimmy & Johnny '58
Jimmie and Johnny Sparton 45 pm's

In 1953, as part of the duo Jimmy and Johnny, he scored a Top 10 hit with 'If You Don't Somebody Else Will.' A decade later, he nabbed his highest-charting solo single, 'Please Talk to My Heart,' which reached the Top 15.

Over the years, numerous big-name artists have recorded Johnny's songs, including George Jones, Charley Pride, Johnny Paycheck, Tammy Wynette and even Elvis Costello.

Johnny had been in poor health following a 1999 stroke, and prior to that, he'd spent the last few decades singing gospel music and focusing on his family. He's survived by four children and Jeannie Mathis, his wife of 43 years.

Northeast Indiana auctioneers are "all shook up" over rare Elvis film - Film shot during 1957 concert in Fort Wayne
10 Septembre 2011

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Elvis was in the building, and there’s proof.

The Ellenberger Brothers auction company in northeast Indiana has been “all shook up” over a piece of history that dates back to Elvis Presley’s 1957 performance at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The business was preparing for a large auction of model toy trains to hit the block Sept. 10 when an unrelated item was brought to its attention.

The woman who will have the auction offered a small tin can to the company in addition to the trains. On top, a small piece of tape reading “Elvis 1957 Colesium,” inside the tin protected a film reel of the King’s appearance. “Rarely do you ever see anything like this but this is just maybe a once in a lifetime thing,” auctioneer Glenn Ellenberger said. “It appears to be the full concert.” The auctioneer said his curiosity encouraged a peek at the strip frame by frame sitting at his kitchen table.

I couldn’t help but pull it open and look at the first few feet of it,” Ellenberger said. “I can see the coliseum. I can see people in the seats in front of it and I can see someone on the stage who I’m sure is Elvis.” The young rock star was just 22 when he spent about 30 minutes on the coliseum stage. Few artifacts are known to exist in the area from the visit, including a couple newspaper articles seen in the microfilm archives of the Allen County Library.

Ellenberger has made arrangements with experts at Indiana University to examine the film’s condition and contents. Until it’s in the hands of professionals, Ellenberger said the tin can holding history will stay under lock and key. Considered extremely valuable, it has been placed in a bank’s safety deposit box. The film will be on sale in an online auction, the date for which has not been determined.

Marsall Grant passes on at 83 years old
9 août 2011

Marshall Grant, an original member of Johnny Cash’s Tennessee Two band and the "boom" in Cash’s famed "boom- chicka-boom" sound, died Sunday morning at St. Bernard’s Medical Center in Jonesboro, Ark., after an aneurysm.
Mr. Grant, 83, was an integral part of most of Cash’s most famous recordings, including "Ring of Fire", "I Walk The Line", "Sunday Morning Coming Down", "Man in Black" and the entirety of Cash’s live albums recorded at Folsom and San Quentin prisons. He was a key component in Cash’s sound from 1954 to 1980 and one of Cash’s most trusted friends.

It was Mr. Grant who switched from guitar to bass so that Cash could stand front and center. It was Mr. Grant who served as road manager for a quarter-century, keeping Cash safe if not untroubled during Cash’s wild, pill-addled years in the 1960s and ’70s. And it was Mr. Grant whose bass provided the underpinning and the pulse for Cash’s signature music. Without Mr. Grant, Johnny Cash would not have been recognizable as Johnny Cash, and American popular music would be different and almost certainly lesser.

"I was thinking yesterday that there would be no me without Marshall", said Cash’s daughter, the singer, songwriter and author Rosanne Cash, on Sunday morning. "Had Dad not had Marshall, he wouldn’t have had the ‘Johnny Cash Sound,’ and he wouldn’t have become all that he was, in his fullness. And I wouldn’t have become a songwriter or a musician. There’s a whole lineage that wouldn’t have happened."

Part of that lineage also involves Country Music Hall of Fame vocal group The Statler Brothers, whom Mr. Grant managed until their 2004 retirement. Mr. Grant also played bass on the Statlers’ 1965 debut smash, "Flowers On The Wall." But his legacy is most prominently entwined with Cash, which is why he and wife Etta drove from their Hernando, Miss., home to Jonesboro last week to participate in the Johnny Cash Festival, a fundraiser to help restore Cash’s boyhood home in nearby Dyess, Ark.

Mr. Grant spent Wednesday afternoon at rehearsals, hearing artists including Kris Kristofferson, George Jones and Rodney Crowell rehearse for the Thursday concert along with Rosanne Cash, Johnny Cash’s sonJohn Carter Cash, daughter-in-law Laura Cash, brother Tommy Cash and many others. Mr. Grant was preparing to speak about Cash’s early recordings at the concert. "He was excited and passionate about the day", said John Carter Cash. "He was right in the thick of it, and he saw history coming full circle." After the Wednesday rehearsal, Mr. Grant grew weary at his hotel while spinning stories with Cash family members. He then collapsed and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot. He died Sunday morning around 3:30.

Mr. Grant’s contributions to Cash’s sound were technically rudimentary but inarguably essential. He wasn’t trained on the bass, and had to affix adhesive tape to the instrument’s neck to let him know where the proper notes were when he, Cash and Luther Perkins began their collaboration. No one in the band was a deft musician in 1954, and it took all three of them to figure out how to tune the big upright bass Mr. Grant bought for $25 at a Memphis store. But their musical limitations allowed an elemental, flourish-free sound that was atypical and instantly identifiable. That sound came to be called "Boom Chicka Boom."

"So many people think we took 10 years creating this style", Mr. Grant said during a Cash tribute concert at the Ryman Auditorium in 2003. "I mean, it was there in the first eight bars (of music) we played, and we spent the next four years trying to get rid of it." They never did get rid of it. "He and Luther were automobile mechanics when they met my dad", said John Carter Cash. "None of the three were educated in music whatsoever, but that’s part of the magic of it : that innocence behind their sound." The Tennessee Two became an inaugural inductee of the Musicians Hall of Fame in 2007, along with Elvis Presley’s Blue Moon Boys and others. Mr. Grant stood onstage that November night at Schermerhorn Symphony Center and played bass while John Carter Cash strummed an acoustic guitar.

Mr. Grant exited Cash’s band in 1980, and subsequent lawsuits over wrongful termination and embezzlement of retirement funds were settled out of court. He and Cash remained friends through all of that, and he documented his experience with Cash in the 2006 memoir I Was There When It Happened : My Life With Johnny Cash. "Marshall was a solid, solid rock", Rosanne Cash said. "I cannot imagine what would have happened on those tours without him. He understood how complicated my dad was, that he was a great artist who had real demons. And Marshall was so consistent. Now, he may have blown up a couple of cherry bombs in a couple of toilets on the road, but he never went off the rails."

What are a couple of toilets when weighed against a life spent altering country and rock ’n’ roll music forever ? "He’d call at least once a month, and we’d spend an hour on the phone and he’d just go over the stories", Cash continued. "It was like he was trying to reconcile them. There were good ones and bad ones, and he carried them all." Mr. Grant’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave. in Memphis. Survivor information and funeral specifics were unavailable at press time. Reach Peter Cooper at (615) 259-8220 or pcooper@tennessean.com.

Fire Chars Cowboy Jack Clement's Home
28 juin 2011

Famed musician and producer Cowboy Jack Clement’s home of 40 years, and the priceless music memorabilia and memories it held, burned Saturday afternoon. Clement, girlfriend Aleene Jackson and others escaped the house off Belmont Boulevard unharmed. Clement also safely secured their three cats and his vintage guitars. “I got my baby,” he said, referring to a Gibson J200 guitar he bought in 1951 while still in the Marines. The guitar was scratched by Elvis Presley’s belt buckle. Clement has been the hand behind the music on legendary productions such as at Sun Records for Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” as well as recording sessions with Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich. He developed the careers of Charley Pride and George Jones. Outside of country music, Clement produced three tracks for U2’s “Rattle and Hum” sessions in Memphis and also produced an album for blues trumpet great Louis Armstrong.

The Cowboy Arms
The brick and stucco Tudor-style home at 3405 Belmont Blvd. has been at the center of his music legend making. Clement referred to the place as The Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa, and Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Eddy Arnold and John Prine were among the many who spent time there. In the studio, built more than 30 years ago, Clement stored reel-to-reel master tapes of recordings — many unreleased — by Cash, Prine, Armstrong and dozens of others. “I’m sure we’ve lost some other memorabilia,” said Clement as he sat in his backyard on apicnic table bench wearing Elvis-print pajamas. He had been out in the yard chatting with a neighbor before a cookout when he heard someone inside yelling there was a fire. “I wasn’t that worried at first,” he said.

Priceless mementos
The fire began in the attic space, and heavy smoke was boiling out the two dormers when the first fire trucks arrived at 2:03 p.m., said Nashville Fire Department Capt. Steve Holt. “It was a hot fire, heavy smoke, all in the attic,” Holt said. The soundproofed studio on the third floor made it difficult for crews to break through and combat the blaze, he said. And 90-degree temperatures kept firefighters from working more than 15 minutes before needing to be relieved. More than 18 trucks and 40 firefighters worked for an hour before the fire was beaten down, leaving a choking stench of charred, wet wood in the Green Hills neighborhood. A fire marshal had yet to determine the cause by Saturday. Clement, 80, bought the house in 1970. It is valued at $621,000 by the Davidson County property assessor. The home was featured prominently in the documentary Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement’s Home Movies. Downstairs, Clement kept priceless mementos such as photos taken by and autographed by best friend Cash, files on music productions and movie scripts.

"I have just been advised by Roger Nunn that DiAnne Kaslow has died recently. She was the lady who in the late 70s shared those wonderful colour photos of Gene in the States performing in 1959. She saw Gene and the Caps many times in the 50s and she came to the UK in 1987 and toured with the Caps and became such a good friend to us all.
If my memory serves me right (and I stand to be corrected) in 70/71 Gene was appearing in some town for a week and DiAnne lived close by and only found out about it afterwards very much to her regret !
Rest in Peace girl. You were a lovely person and it was good to know you.

Really cool site !!! Love it ! Thanks man !
I certainly appreciate your love an interest in the music and all those like yourself throughout Europe. I know it has brought me a lot of pleasure and most of all ''confirmation'' of a life of music. It is so important for Artists to know that they have been heard and recognized, and you guys have done that for many Artists throughout the U.S. who otherwise, would've never heard the words they most desired, ''I hear you''! It was 52yrs. from the time I sang those songs to Norma Jean (Babydoll) in Indiana and heard John Burton say; ''we heard you Jimmie Dale, all the way from Europe''! Bless his Heart--and thanks to all for their support!!

US radio show done by our friend Roddy Jackson

Howdy cats and dolls,

Here's a link for a US radio show done by our friend Roddy Jackson on KIOS (Merced - CA) on April 30, 2011 :

http://artsinthevalley.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/roddyjackson.mp3

It's thrilling to hear again his voice... Very easy to understand so don't be shy try it. Nice to hear him talking about his parents and hisr first try at piano being six years old. Sock Hops and Bill Haley, Fats Domino are great reminder for those who think everything started with Elvis on TV in January 1956. Yep, "Rock Around The Clock" and "Ain't That A Shame" are definitive rock and roll milestones ! Great to hear about Sonny Bono and Little Richard, The Quasar ! Roddy makes some folks aware of Dick Clark's ways telling how his American Bandstand performance was cancelled at the last moment for payola reasons. You should appreciate much to heard him telling on the radio waves how European fans tried to find you and treating you like a royalty since to came oversea to enjoy us. It comes for you who enjoyed the "Rock and Roll Revue Party" past November.

Listen Roddy shooting "I love race music", "I love the black music" and singing acapella "She Said Yeah" is something else. We can be glad about Roddy leaving the crazy wild rock and roll life just in time and start a new life but... still keepin' musical activities.

Roddy is still pretty full of energy and I just wish you all to be as well and strong as him when reaching its age.

Hiccups !

Décès de Johnny Preston Courville
6 mars 2011

Another swamp pop legend is gone !

Sun record was french
13 février 2011

Yep, Cats and Kitties... Sun was a french record label at first ! That guy was a very popular Cabrette player and a real bougnat... That label was set in 1927 by Martin Cayla who passed away in 1951. So that "folk" label predate and beat flat Sam Phillips' legendary Memphis label.

Hey Pardner, put your beret on, get your French loaf of bread, get a bottle of red wine "La Grappe Joyeuse". Grab la Marie, vingt dieux... and do the "Bois-en un coup du picrate Spo-Dee-O-Dee". If you dig it you can also get a "Trois Hermines" bottle of wine 'cause that's a nice blend between vinegar and acid that will make you blast off... Squeeze your woman, put your wooden shoes, listen la bourrée auvergante and "Gonna Dance All Night" like did Hardrock Gunter on Sun 201. The Wombie Zombie & The Hillbilly Ghost

The Velvatones make newspaper pages
9 janvier 2011

Thanks to the work of ACE records, Martin Hawkins, John Broven and Dave Sax, The Velvatones had make them comeback on newspaper in 2003, 46 years after they cut two sides for the legendary "Meteor" label out of Memphis (Tennessee).

Originally the group was called the Medinettes, all four gals being students at Medina High School just North of Jackson (Tennessee). In 1956, they went to Trenton, Tennessee, and won the first prize of $ 40 at the Gibson County Talent Show. Trenton was the home town of Bobby Lollar and Pete Beavers. Then they won the Mid-South Fair un Memphis with $ 140 and it led them to a recording contract, a radio spot in Milan and a TV show on WDXI in Jackson.

The Velvatones repertoire ranged from pop to current hits like "Seventeen" or "Be Bop a Lula" worked in a style close to the Chordettes or the Fontane Sisters. On them both sides cut in 1957, "Feeling Kinda Lonely / Real Gone Baby" (Meteor 5042), they are backed by Paul Buskirk, Frank Tolley and Johnny Bernero and two unknow musicians. It was them only record… A session set for June 1957 was cancelled and Julia Graves and Kay Ross got married. A new singer Marcia Watt was bring in and the band took the name of The Charmettes. By the summer of 1959, all five gals were married and their career together was over.

To see them in a local newspaper in 2003 was a great surprise and a welcome local reward. The same happened to Bobby Lollar in 2009 after his complete story was told in "Rock and Roll Revue".

Let said the best is always to come and let’s hope 2010 will bring us more surprises on the web, mags, books and newspapers. We’re gonna to the best we can to feed you with your favorite meat… Rock and Roll !

Message de Roddy Jackson
4 janvier 2011

Hi Everybody,

I don’t have much time to write because there is so much going on right now but I wanted to share with you about the concert I did in Paris on November 7th.

The Paris concert, which was sponsored by Rock And Roll Revue magazine, was received very well and even though the weather alternated between rainy and cold/windy we still had a great time. Our friends in Paris took us on a tour of both Paris and Versailles and the sights and companionship were wonderful. The Rock And Roll Revue people treated us like their best friends and we are their friends for life.

We also took a bus tour that was fabulous. The bus stopped at all of the famous places and we had the choice of staying on the bus or getting off at any stop, in which case another bus would be arriving every ten minutes. The tickets we bought for the tour were good for two days and so, in spite of the weather we were able to see Paris !

Attached are four photos taken during the concert by one of the organizers of the concert and a very dear friend of mine. More about my upcoming concert in England on January 22nd and in Las Vegas on April 24th very soon ! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosperous New Year !

Patrice "Charlie" Barbat nous a quitté
14 octobre 2010

Salut Charlie,

Puis tu as accepté d'écrire pour "Rock and Roll Revue".

20 septembre 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (A.P.) - Earl Scruggs' son says the bluegrass pioneer is "doing fine" after reports the 86-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member was hospitalized.

Gary Scruggs declined to give more details about his father's illness when contacted by The Associated Press on Thursday. Multiple media outlets have reported the legendary banjo player was hospitalized Wednesday because he wasn't feeling well before a concert at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

It is not clear what hospital Scruggs stayed at. A spokeswoman for the UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill says records do not show Scruggs stayed there.
